Mould inhibition
Moulds proliferate in aerobic environments, particularly when feed is exposed to high moisture, warm temperatures, and extended storage times. Their activity leads to nutrient degradation and increases the risk of mycotoxin production. Mould inhibitors, commonly based on organic acids like propionic acid, exert fungistatic or fungicidal effects, helping to preserve feed quality and extend shelf life under challenging storage conditions.
Feed and raw materials are highly susceptible to contamination by pathogenic and spoilage bacteria. Antimicrobial agents reduce microbial load primarily by lowering pH and interfering with essential bacterial functions, targeting Gram-negative species such as Salmonella. This contributes to safer feed handling, reduced cross-contamination risk, and improved overall hygiene status of stored materials.
Toxin binders mitigate the effects of dietary mycotoxins by preventing their absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. Inorganic binders (e.g. bentonites, aluminosilicates) adsorb polar toxins through electrostatic interactions, while organic binders (e.g. yeast derivatives) may support biotransformation, enzymatic degradation, or immune modulation. Multi-mechanism binding ensures broader protection across toxin types.
Lipid peroxidation and oxidative degradation of feed components compromise energy value, palatability, and vitamin stability. Antioxidants interrupt free radical chain reactions, stabilizing lipids and sensitive nutrients.
